Senior Training Officer: General Training and Development  Strand  Somerset West

ASLA seeks to employ an energetic and dynamic individual to take on the exciting training role, implementing and overseeing all ASLA training aspects from planning to execution.  

The ideal candidate will have experience in the construction training environment and display the ability to interact with senior management and have the potential to grow into a senior management role. 

The incumbent will ensure compliance with CETA requirements, including the Workplace Skills Plan and Annual Training Report, secure Mandatory Grants, and meet BBBEE construction scorecard requirements. This role is considered to be instrumental for organisational growth and demands strong leadership, communication, and analytical skills to drive employee development and engagement.

Required Role Qualifications and Skills:

  • Degree in Human Resources Management, Business, or a related field. An Honours degree is preferred.
  • 8 - 10 Years of experience in training and development, preferably in the construction industry

Key Role Skills:

  • Strong understanding of adult learning principles and training delivery techniques.
  • Excellent communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to design and implement strategic and skills training programs.
  • Knowledge of CETA requirements and BBBEE construction scorecard requirements.
  • Working knowledge of psychometric testing and evaluation instruments
  • Computer literacy in MS Office products, online Learner Management Systems (LMS), HR databases such as Sage People or similar.

Key Role Responsibilities:

Strategic Planning

  • Collaborate with senior management to understand organisational goals and objectives.
  • Develop a strategic training plan that supports the company's long-term vision and mission.
  • Identify key performance indicators (KPI's) to measure the effectiveness of training initiatives.

Training Needs Analysis

  • Conduct thorough needs assessments to identify skill gaps and training requirements.
  • Gather feedback from employees and managers to understand training needs.
  • Analyse performance data and trends to prioritise training areas that align with business objectives.

Evaluation and Feedback

  • Develop evaluation methods to assess the impact and effectiveness of training programs.
  • Collect and analyse feedback from participants to identify areas for improvement.
  • Adjust training strategies and content based on evaluation results and feedback.

BBBEE Construction Score Card Requirements

  • Staying abreast of the BBBEE scorecard requirements for the Construction Industry.
  • Measure and manage skills programme against sub-elements of Skills Development
  • Ensure that the BBBEE scorecard planning is organised and that all record-keeping is up to date.

Employment Equity

  • Participate as a member of the Employment Equity Committee to provide feedback on general training and development aspects.
  • Ensure EE minutes are correctly signed off for the annual WSP & ATR submission.

Bursary, Learnerships, and Intern programme

  • Plan and execute recruitment of bursars, interns, and candidates for learnerships.
  • Liaise with universities, industry role players, and service providers. Advertise, shortlist, interview, and perform related administration.

Annual Training Report and Workplace Skills Plan

  • Compile the Group's Annual Training Report and Workplace Skills Plans and ensure submission to the relevant government bodies within the specified deadline.
  • Identify opportunities and apply for discretionary funding.

Mentorship Programme Management

  • Manage all aspects of the mentorship program, including mentor-mentee matching, program promotion, communication with participants, scheduling and coordinating mentorship sessions, and monitoring program effectiveness.

Management of the ASLA Induction Program

  • In collaboration with key stakeholders, assist with redesigning and implementing an updated version of the induction program.
  • Implement and manage induction/onboarding.

Training Delivery

  • Collaborate with subject matter experts to deliver specialised training content.
  • Utilise technology and e-learning platforms to deliver training to all employees.
  • Identify and collaborate with training institutions such as universities to address tertiary training needs.
  • Evaluate and select external training vendors, consultants, or resources when necessary.

Candidate engineers and young professionals programme

  • Create and coordinate an in-house exposure program to train young and newly qualified engineers and construction managers during the first years of their careers.
  • Assist and guide candidacy programmes and professional registration.
  • Coordinate mentors and referees required in the registration process
