1. Main Function of the Role

The Canvas Sewing Operator is responsible for manufacturing, assembling, and fitting high-quality fabric components for safari vehicles, trailers, and related outdoor products. This includes sewing, cutting, and finishing heavy-duty materials such as canvas and PVC to meet Safariquip’s craftsmanship and durability standards. The role supports product innovation, ensures precision workmanship, and contributes to the company’s commitment to excellence in outdoor fabrication.

2. Key Performance Areas (KPAs)

  • Industrial Sewing Operations: Operate heavy-duty sewing machines for canvas, PVC, and outdoor fabrics.
  • Fabric Cutting & Assembly: Measure, cut, hem, and join materials according to technical patterns and templates.
  • Product Fabrication: Produce and assemble seat covers, canopies, roofs, tents, and awnings for safari vehicles.
  • Quality Assurance: Inspect all finished work to ensure it meets design, strength, and appearance specifications.
  • Equipment Maintenance: Clean, maintain, and perform basic troubleshooting on sewing machines and tools.
  • Installation Support: Assist in fitting and mounting fabric components on game viewers, trailers, and related units.
  • Design Collaboration: Work closely with the production and design teams to refine fabric fit and product function.
  • Health, Safety & Efficiency: Adhere to workplace safety standards and complete tasks within set production deadlines.

3. Qualifications and Experience

Qualifications:

  • Matric (Grade 12) or equivalent.
  • Relevant sewing or upholstery certification (preferred).
  • Valid South African ID or work permit.

Experience:

  • Minimum of 5 years’ experience sewing heavy-duty canvas, tents, awnings, canopies, or safari vehicle upholstery.
  • Proficient in operating industrial heavy-duty sewing machines (canvas, PVC, ripstop).
  • Ability to read and interpret technical drawings, patterns, and templates.
  • Strong background in precision stitching, fabric fitting, and pattern work.
  • Advantageous: Experience in vehicle seat upholstery or game viewer roof fabrication.

Remuneration

  • Salary: R10,000 – R16,000 per month (depending on qualifications and experience).
