Anti-Poaching Ranger (Trainee)

1. Main Function of the Role

The Anti-Poaching Ranger (Trainee) is responsible for supporting wildlife protection through active participation in conservation security operations while undergoing intensive training. The role develops individuals into disciplined, operational field rangers capable of protecting wildlife species in high-risk, remote environments.

 

2. Key Performance Areas (KPAs)

Training & Development

  • Successfully complete the Pre-Selection Program and all required training modules.
  • Demonstrate competence in tactical field craft, navigation, communication, and first aid.
  • Apply knowledge of wildlife protection laws and operational procedures.

Operational Readiness

  • Maintain required physical fitness levels and meet all endurance standards.
  • Demonstrate mental resilience and the ability to perform under pressure.
  • Adhere to strict discipline, punctuality, and professional standards.

Field Operations (Post-Training)

  • Conduct multi-day foot patrols to detect and deter illegal activities.
  • Monitor and protect wildlife species through active surveillance.
  • Record and report field intelligence, including animal sightings and human activity.
  • Utilize GPS, radios, and other tools effectively during operations.

Teamwork & Conduct

  • Operate effectively within a small, structured team environment.
  • Follow instructions accurately and perform tasks independently when required.
  • Maintain high standards of conduct, integrity, and professionalism.

Equipment & Asset Management

  • Maintain and care for all issued equipment, including field gear and communication devices.
  • Ensure operational readiness of equipment at all times.

 

3. Qualifications and Experience

Minimum Requirements

  • No prior military, police, or security experience required.
  • Proficiency in reading, writing, and understanding English.
  • Valid National ID.
  • Clear criminal record with valid NamPol Clearance Certificate.

Pre-Selection Requirements

  • Pass aptitude tests (minimum 70%).
  • Successfully complete a formal interview.
  • Meet physical fitness standards:
    • 2.5 km run (max 10 minutes)
    • Push-ups (max repetitions)
    • Sit-ups (max repetitions)
    • Pull-ups (max repetitions)
    • Shuttle runs (timed)
  • Successfully complete a 32-hour endurance test.

Desirable

  • Interest or passion for conservation and wildlife protection.
  • Ability to work in physically demanding outdoor environments.
