Role Responsibilities

  • The General Secretary shall conduct the business of the Union in accordance with Constitution and its rules and shall carry out the instructions of the CEC/NGC and the NEC.
  • Supervise, and be responsible for conducting all correspondence and keeping all books, minutes, records, documents and papers belonging to the Union in a such a form and manner as the NEC may direct.
  • Formulation and implementation of the Union’s Strategic plan.
  • Developing and reviewing organisational policies, including a business continuity plan, policies and procedures.
  • To develop management and organisational structures and processes that enable union to deliver its strategic aims and objectives.
  • Ensures compliance to OSH protocols and performance reviews of staff.
  • Ensuring membership representation across all statutory established dispute resolution and case management mechanisms.
  • Facilitate the functions of collective bargaining and organizing in respect of national negotiations with employers and other agenciesΒ as directed by NEC.
  • Coordinate robust membership recruitment strategies and organising of union structures and members activism.
  • Oversee diagnostic membership training needs and priorities across union structures.
  • Undertake review of union education, training and capacity building strategies in order to align with existing capacity needs and demands across union structures.
  • To proactively coordinate harmonious union relations with internal and external sister unions, partners and key stakeholders.
  • Coordinate the union lobby and advocacy strategies as directed by the union President and the NEC.
  • Ensure that the union operates within budget and that union activities and project plans are implemented financial prudently and aligned to cost controls.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Human Resources Management, Public Administration, Business Administration, Political Science, Industrial Psychology, International Relations, Law or Equivalent.

Experience

  • Minimum of eight (8) years in a managerial Responsibilities in aΒ Trade Union environment, with proven practical application of the required skills and competencies.
  • Membership to a professional leadership and corporate bodies body will be an added advantage.Β 

Knowledge & Skills required

  • Excellent leadership skills, along with honesty, integrity and trustworthiness.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, including negotiation, persuasion and representation, as well as the preparation and presentation of reports and submissions on complex industrial, legal and political issues.
  • The ability to act as an advocate for the Union in influencing key figures in government, public sector, employers and the wider labour movement at national and international level.
  • Sound strategic planning skills, together with the ability to identify and deliver organisational objectives.
  • High degree of personal organisation, planning and time management, able and willing to work odd hours.
  • Political savvy in current Trade Union context and environment.
  • The ability to react promptly and responsibly to rapidly changing situations, often in a stressful environment.
  • Conversant with labour laws of Botswana.
  • Computer literacy.
